The core of the enneagramme process is becoming aware of the nature of attention of each type and how this attention impacts our lives, our relationships and our understanding of ourselves.

In the beginning each of us looks out into the world through a window. That view, that perspective is initially fresh and full of promise. We spend hours, days, and then years gazing at the valley stretched before us, certain that this is how it is, this is what is true.

And then one day, we notice that hidden in the landscape there is another house and another window. And we begin to wonder, does the valley look the same from that other window? But how could it be different we say to ourselves, certain of our hold on the truth. But already the crack runs through the certainty of our worldview.

By chance, while out walking, we meet the owner of that other house who invites us to visit. And what a revelation it is to see the valley from a totally different perspective. It can’t be the same valley we say. From our house there is no waterfull while from here it is plain as the light of day.

So we go back home, look out our window and try as we might, see no sign of the waterfall. Is it there, we wonder, behind the line of tall oaks?

And we discover other houses dotted across the valley, each one with a window, each with a different perspective. And if fortune is kind, we get the chance to visit each of the houses, see the valley from each of these different points of view. And coming back home, the view from our window is the same, but our understanding of it has shifted and deepened, and like ourselves, our understanding of the valley has utterly changed.

In the early 1970′s in Berkley, the Chilean psychiatrist Claudio Naranjo began transmitting his understanding of personality type to a closed group of people including the psychologist Helen Palmer. This system of personality types was later to become known as the enneagramme system.

Naranjo’s method of investigation involved people of the same type coming together into groups or panels to talk about the experience of their dominant personality type. This method of investigation – the panel method – embodies the essence of what is known as the oral tradition.

Within the oral tradition, the person discovers and shares the experience of their type and becomes a source of knowledge not only for themselves but for those with whom they share this understanding. At this point, the usual distinction between teacher and student loses its importance. Within the oral tradition each person has the potential to become their own authority through the sharing of experience. That is why the responsability of identifying type belongs to the person themselves and no one else.

What lies at the centre of this method of investigation is observing the nature of one’s personal experience. The enneagramme proposes a way to map out that experience, to give it a more tangible, identifiable form. Within the oral tradition, it is through the discovery and expression of one’s dominant type that one comes to a better knowing of oneself and the world.

The oral tradition can be traced back in history through many different cultures. Within the Christian tradition, the practices of the Desert Fathers in Egypt during the fourth century were an embodiment of the oral tradition. When Helen Palmer went on to developed her own work with the enneagramme, the panel method became both the corner stone and ethical principal underlying all her work.

Yes, the date initially set for the free mini-conference about the benefits of using the Ennneagramme falls at the end of the school holidays. Not the best moment for a lot of people.

So it is being pushed back to the following Friday – March 18th at 20h00.

Note the new date in your diaries.

Hopefully, this falls into more people’s schedules and will be an opportunity to discover more about the Enneagramme and the training being offered.

The conference will be held at Malachy Coleman’s office, 38 rue Casimir Périer, in central Nantes.

Some refreshments will be provided but feel free to bring something of your own along. And if you do come, please let us know in advance by email (info [at] nantesenneagrammetraining.com).

See you then!
